Chateau Les Reuilles Bordeaux 2005

dsc_8811_1I’ll admidt, Bordeaux has been much of my wine drinking life for the past six months year. I think to really get a good base in wine and learn a lot about it, you’ve gotta be drinking French wine. It all started there, and no one’s going to ever do it better than they do. The vines are incredibly old, and there’s so much tradition. Bordeaux is good. Real good.Chateau Les Reuilles Bordeaux 2005 was a great gift from my awesome sister, Jen. Katey and I decided to break it out of the old wine rack last night and give it a whirl. The first thing I’ll say about Bordeuax is that all the wine labels are typical traditional wine labels that bore me. Give me something new, France!

The color of this wine is a gorgeous ruby like color – you can see through it pretty easily, which is just the opposite of the big syrahs and cabernets of California.

The nose of this wine is actually kind of tight – I can’t smell too much of it. I get little hints of strawberries and raspberries, with just a smidge of a hint of oak. It leans toward the red fruit side of the scale, and it shows.

The palate of this wine kills. It’s delicious. On the front end, lots of delicious strawberries and raspberries and some oak. On the mid palate, there’s some oak and leather, and of course more berries. This wine is nice and balanced, and has very fresh fruit that taste like they were just picked from the field, juiced, and added to the wine. This Bordeaux also has a great non-extracted taste that you tend to get from wines of this price category. You get this sense of really fresh fruit – it’s like comparing real grapes to the taste of grape Big League Chew. Know what I mean? Compare fruit juice to the taste of real fruit. It’s that sort of taste. Just get out there and drink some wine and you’ll get what I mean. The tannin structure is such a good balance, which is remarkable for a wine at this price. It’s pretty medium bodied without getting too bitter – just how I like it. The finish was a little short and disappointing to me, which was my least favorite part of the wine. It was a tad on the bitter side.

Long story short, this wine was very good. It was well balanced and brought great fruit that I couldn’t get enough of to the table.
